Dear RCS Family:

On Monday, the Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Dr. Donald B. Weatherspoon as Interim Superintendent and will soon conduct a search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Benjamin Edmondson, who was removed at the end of December.

Dr. Weatherspoon is a longtime fixture in Michigan’s education community, known for his work with school districts around the state as an emergency manager, and brings statewide experience solving school management challenges.

Our top priority this year is addressing the financial and accounting challenges our district has endured for far too long. Dr. Weatherspoon brings a long track record of leadership, coupled with his extensive experience solving complex problems. We look forward to his leadership in the district.

Dr. Weatherspoon earned his Doctorate at the University of Michigan, specializing in general education administration. He earned his Master’s degree at Eastern Michigan University in early childhood education and his Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in police administration.

His previous experience includes serving every Michigan governor since Governor William Milliken, in departments ranging from Commerce to Corrections, Natural Resources to the state Department of Education. He has been an emergency financial manager for several Michigan communities, including Muskegon Heights and Highland Park schools on emergency management plans and Pontiac and Benton Harbor schools where he consulted.

“In the months ahead, I will be focused on helping Romulus Community Schools address and resolve challenges and questions around its financial and accounting processes, to help ensure its next permanent leader is positioned for success on Day One,” Weatherspoon said. “I look forward to working with the board, the staff and all interested members of the community on the school system’s top priority, which is creating a positive learning environment to prepare Romulus children for successful futures.”

With Students in Mind,
